Keratin smoothing, and everything you should ask before you book
Keratin is a protein already in your hair. A smoothing treatment coats the hair in a film that smooths the cuticle and penetrates it, then a stylist seals it in with a professional iron at a temperature matched to your hair type.
The result lasts two to two and a half months depending on your environment, how often you wash, and what you use. If you usually style your hair straight, it can cut your blow-dry time by 40 to 60 percent.
Choose a salon that respects your health — and your stylist's
Ask your stylist about the formaldehyde content of the treatment they are proposing. They should be able to name the exact brand, and ideally confirm it is formaldehyde-free.
Be careful of a salon that cannot answer that question. This is a treatment applied with heat, in an enclosed space, by someone who does it all day — the formulation matters for you and for them.
Set your expectations honestly
If your goal is to remove all curl and have poker-straight hair, a formaldehyde-free keratin probably will not get you there. Keratin smooths, reduces frizz and cuts styling time — it does not restructure the hair.
Changing your hair's actual texture is a different chemical process: permanent straightening. If that is what you are after, we will tell you so rather than sell you a treatment that will disappoint you.
Watch out for bargain-basement keratin
You get what you pay for. When you pay more, you are paying for a skilled stylist who can feel your hair, read what is already on it, and pick the right formula for your hair type — and who knows that the ironing is where the result is won or lost.
We have looked after keratin clients at Merivale for years. It is not a one-treatment-suits-all system, so after considerable research and training we keep several different keratin systems in the salon and choose between them. What actually is keratin?
A protein that is naturally in your hair already. A smoothing treatment adds more of it and seals it into the cuticle with heat.
How long does the appointment take?
About 90 minutes or longer, depending on your hair's length and thickness.
Will it stop my hair frizzing in the rain?
Yes — that is the main thing clients notice. You can walk out in light rain or humidity and your hair will hold its shape.
When can I wash my hair afterwards?
Not for three to four days. The keratin needs that time to work, and washing early undoes the treatment.
What shampoo do I need afterwards?
A sodium-sulphate-free shampoo. Sulphates and salt both strip the treatment out early, so it is worth swapping your shampoo before you leave.
Can I still swim?
Keep it to a minimum. Salt water and chlorine are both hard on a treatment's longevity — they will not ruin it, but they will shorten it.
How long will it last?
Expect two to two and a half months, depending on how often you wash, what products you use, sun exposure and swimming.
