Our philosophy

Hair colour is personal

There is no single blonde.

There is no single brunette.

The colour that looks incredible on somebody else may not be the colour that makes you look incredible. So we never simply copy a photograph. We look at the complete picture.

  • Skin tone
  • Natural hair colour
  • Eyes
  • Haircut
  • Lifestyle
  • Existing colour
  • Hair condition
And, most importantly,

how you want to feel when you look in the mirror.

Colour that wears beautifully

We don’t want your colour to simply look fabulous when you leave the salon. We want it to wear beautifully, fade beautifully and remain beautiful between appointments.

Beautiful blondes

Blonde is one of the most technically demanding areas of professional hair colour.

From creamy and champagne blondes to bright clean blondes, dimensional blondes and softer natural finishes, the possibilities are enormous.

But beautiful blonde isn’t simply about making hair lighter. It is about achieving the right level of lightness and the right tone while protecting the condition of the hair.

One of the most common problems we see is blonde that has become yellow, orange, dull or brassy. Sometimes the answer is toning. Sometimes it isn’t. If the underlying hair hasn’t been lifted cleanly enough, continually applying toner may disguise the warmth temporarily, only for the brassiness to reappear as the toner fades.

Our approach is to understand why your blonde is brassy before deciding how to correct it.

Brunettes with dimension

Brown hair should never have to look flat or heavy. Beautiful brunette colour can contain incredible depth, shine and dimension.

From rich chocolate and espresso through to softer caramel, mocha and dimensional brunette tones, we personalise your colour to complement your complexion and haircut.

Strategically placed lighter or deeper pieces create movement without necessarily creating an obvious highlighted effect.

Rich, expensive and beautifully conditioned.

Coppers, reds & warm colours

If you want colour with personality, this is where things get exciting. Copper, auburn, strawberry, mahogany and vibrant red tones can create some of the most striking hair colours.

The secret is choosing the correct intensity and undertone. Some clients look incredible in a bright copper. Others suit something softer and more golden. Some carry rich reds and deeper auburn beautifully.

We personalise the formula rather than treating every copper or red as the same colour, and talk you through maintenance, because vibrant colours need the right home care to stay rich and glossy.

Want something different? Hair colour can be creative. Depending on your starting point and hair condition, our colourists can create statement shades, bold panels, colour accents and more adventurous fashion colours.

This is where consultation becomes particularly important. Fashion colour often requires the hair to be prelightened before the final shade is applied, so we need to understand your colour history and assess your hair before deciding what is safely achievable.

Sometimes a dramatic transformation can happen in one appointment. Sometimes the best result requires a journey. We will always be upfront about that.

Not every colour needs to be all over

Foils, balayage and dimensional colouring techniques allow us to strategically introduce lightness, depth and contrast exactly where it is needed. The placement is just as important as the colour itself.

Beautiful dimensional colour can:

  • Brighten around the face
  • Create movement through a haircut
  • Add depth to flat colour
  • Make fine hair appear more dimensional
  • Create softer colour transitions
  • Introduce lightness without colouring every strand
  • Produce a more personalised finish

Your colourist will recommend the technique that best suits the result you want, rather than using a particular technique simply because it is fashionable.

Hair colour correction Christchurch

When your colour has gone wrong, don’t keep colouring over it

Colour correction is one of the most technical areas of professional hairdressing. Perhaps…

01

Your blonde has become orange.

02

Your brunette is almost black.

03

Your highlights are stripey.

04

Your ends are much darker than your roots.

05

Your hair has several different bands of colour.

06

Your toner has become muddy.

07

Your colour is too warm.

08

Years of repeated colouring have built up so much pigment that you don’t know what to do next.

This is where professional colour correction becomes incredibly important.

Adding another colour over the top is not always the answer.

Why does my blonde keep going brassy?

Why hair colour becomes brassy

Brassiness is one of the biggest concerns we hear from colour clients.

Hair naturally exposes underlying warm pigments as it is lightened. Depending on the starting colour and level of lift, this can include red, orange, gold and yellow.

Toners and glosses can neutralise unwanted warmth, but they cannot always compensate for an incorrect underlying foundation. If hair continually becomes orange or strongly yellow shortly after colouring, we need to establish what is happening underneath the toner.

A beautiful long lasting colour begins with the correct foundation. That is why our colour correction process starts with diagnosis rather than guesswork.

Our approach to colour correction

Every corrective colour is different. Before beginning, we may assess:

  • Your natural hair colour
  • Your current artificial colour
  • Previous permanent and demi permanent colour
  • Box colour history
  • Highlights or bleaching
  • Existing colour bands
  • Porosity
  • Hair strength and elasticity
  • Unwanted warmth
  • The colour you ultimately want
Strand test

For significant colour corrections, we may recommend a strand test before undertaking the full service. It tells us how existing artificial pigment will lift and, equally importantly, how much the hair can safely tolerate. Hair integrity always comes first.

Be realistic. Be beautiful.

Colour correction can be a journey

We believe in being realistic with our clients. If you have years of dark artificial colour and want to become a clean blonde, it may not be possible or responsible to attempt the entire transformation in one appointment. Similarly, compromised hair may require treatments, cutting or time before further lightening.

We will explain what is achievable, what may take several appointments and how we recommend getting there.

Drag to compare

Same woman. Same lighting. Colour corrected.Illustrative example of a colour correction. Results vary with your hair’s history and condition, which is why every correction starts with a consultation.

Our goal isn’t a dramatic photograph at the expense of your hair. It’s beautiful hair colour while preserving beautiful hair.

The products matter

Premium professional Italian colour

Our colour

Premium professional Italian hair colour

At V For Hair, we work with premium professional Italian hair colour, allowing our colourists to create everything from beautiful natural shades through to sophisticated fashion tones.

Professional colour gives us the flexibility to formulate specifically for the individual rather than relying on a one size fits all approach. Tone, depth and reflect can be adjusted to create a colour specifically for your hair and complexion.

Combined with professional treatments, glossing and appropriate home care, our goal is colour that looks rich, dimensional and beautifully conditioned.

Between colour appointments

Glossing & toning

Sometimes your hair doesn’t need another major colour service. It needs its sparkle back.

Professional glossing and toning can refresh faded colour, enhance tone, increase shine and help neutralise unwanted warmth.

A gloss can be particularly beautiful between major colour appointments, when your overall colour is still good but has lost some of its freshness.

Think of it as refreshing the finish rather than starting your colour again.

Colour care

Keeping your colour beautiful at home

Your colour appointment is only part of the story. What happens during the weeks afterwards can have an enormous impact on how your hair looks. The wrong shampoo, excessive heat, UV exposure, frequent washing and incorrect toning products can all affect colour longevity and condition.

We will recommend home care according to your particular colour, rather than telling every colour client to use the same products.

For blondes

Anti-yellow & toning

This may include professional anti yellow or toning products.

For reds & coppers

Reduce colour fade

For vibrant reds and coppers, the priority may be reducing premature colour fade.

For dry or lightened hair

Hydrate & protect

Hydration, strengthening and heat protection may become particularly important.

One important point

More purple shampoo isn’t always better.

Overusing highly pigmented products can sometimes leave blonde looking dull or muddy. The goal is balanced, clean, beautiful colour.

Ask your colourist how often you should use your toning products.

Healthy hair first

Hair condition comes first

We love transformations, but not at any cost. Healthy looking hair will almost always make a colour look more expensive.

If we believe your hair cannot safely tolerate the service you are requesting, we will explain why and recommend another approach. That may mean adjusting the colour goal, introducing professional treatments, cutting compromised ends or creating the transformation over several appointments.

Saying not yet can sometimes be the most professional decision a colourist makes.

Your hair colour consultation

A great colour begins with a great consultation

  • Tell us what you love.
  • Tell us what you hate.
  • Bring photographs.
  • Tell us what has previously been done to your hair, including box colour and home colouring.
  • Tell us how much maintenance you realistically want.
  • And tell us what isn’t working with your current colour.

We can then develop a colour plan around your hair, your lifestyle and the result you want to achieve. For significant transformations and colour corrections, consultation is particularly important.

Frequently asked hair colour questions

Why does my blonde keep going brassy?

There can be several reasons. Sometimes the toner has simply faded. In other cases, the underlying hair may not have been lifted to the appropriate level. Product choice, water, heat and environmental exposure can also affect tone. We assess the cause before recommending the correction.

Can you fix orange or yellow blonde hair?

In many cases, yes. The appropriate solution depends on why the unwanted warmth is present. It may involve toning, glossing, further controlled lightening or a more comprehensive colour correction.

Can you remove dark box colour?

Artificial dark pigment can often be lightened or corrected, but results vary considerably. Multiple layers of home colour can be particularly challenging. A consultation and strand test may be recommended before we establish a corrective plan.

Can I go from dark hair to blonde in one appointment?

Sometimes significant lightening is possible, but attempting to reach the final result in one session is not always safe or realistic. Your previous colour history and hair condition will determine the best approach.

What is a colour correction?

Colour correction is a specialised service designed to correct unwanted colour results such as brassiness, excessive darkness, banding, patchiness, unwanted tones or previous colour buildup. Corrective services are individually planned because no two situations are exactly the same.

Do you offer fashion colours?

Yes. We can create a range of contemporary fashion shades and personalised colour effects, subject to consultation and the condition and starting colour of your hair.

How do I make my salon colour last longer?

Professional home care, appropriate washing frequency, heat protection and the correct toning or colour maintenance products can make a significant difference. Your colourist can recommend a personalised home care routine.

Do I need a consultation before colouring?

For straightforward colour appointments this may not always be necessary. For major changes, blonding, fashion colours or colour correction, we strongly recommend a consultation so we can assess your hair and properly plan the service. Book your consultation.
